The Birmingham Boy Was Not the Intended Target; the Passes Were Meant for a Home about a Block Away

A 12-year-old boy suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound in a drive-by shooting Friday night in east Birmingham, according to police.
The child was not the intended target; the shots were meant for a home about a block away from the boy’s, police said.
The shooting happened in the 8300 block of 1st Avenue South.
The shooting happened sometime around 6:30 p.m., when Birmingham 911 began receiving ShotSpotter alerts indicating gunfire rang out in the 8300 block of Division Avenue, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Officers were updated that the child was shot at 1st Avenue South -- one block south from Division Avenue.
On Division Avenue, officers found shell casings in the roadway, Fitzgerald said.
On 1st Avenue South , the 12-year-old boy was found shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene and rushed the child to Children’s Hospital, where he remained Friday night with life-threatening injuries.
