The Birmingham Beasts Have Already Scored 5 TDs in this Early 2024 Season

As reported by WBRC:

Just two weeks into 2024 and Birmingham Police say they’re investigating five murders so far, including a 16-year-old who was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

WBRC FOX6 News caught up with the police chief this week to find out what needs to be done to put a stop to all the violence.

“One shooting is too many,” said Chief Scott Thurmond. “Right now our violent crime is down 46% as to where we were last year at this point in time... Reducing gun violence in the City of Birmingham is our top priority.”

Even so it’s the goal, it’s not exactly easy.

“What we normally see in our violence is people who have relationships with other people,” he explains. “It’s not stranger to stranger and so it’s hard for us or law enforcement to get ahead of those things when we never know there’s an altercation or a situation brewing between two different groups or two different people.”

This is why they rely so heavily on the community to share what they know.

Still, the chief says BPD is doing what they can when they can to stop what is in their control.

“We have a CompStat meeting daily with our patrol bureau and other investigative bureaus to look at the crime that’s occurred in the last 24 hours,” said Chief Thurmond. “We look at what can we do to prevent crime in those areas that are occurring in the next 24, so looking at trends.”

If possible, they try to catch criminals doing smaller crimes before they become bigger crimes.
