To stop gun violence in Chattanooga, efforts need to be focused on mental health and other root causes, not only its symptoms, residents and leaders agreed at a city summit Friday.
The event, focused on the intersection of mental health and gun violence, brought residents, faith groups, nonprofits and officials from Chattanooga and Hamilton County together to discuss what can be done to mitigate gun violence especially among young people.
"We are a violent culture," William Terry Ladd III, pastor of First Baptist Church, said during a panel. "And until we start addressing the violence from the pulpit, in the classrooms, on the police force, in all aspects of violence -- because it does not start with somebody bringing a gun and shooting somebody in the street.
